Several new staff members have recently joined The Bismarck Tribune, including longtime Associated Press reporter Blake Nicholson.

Nicholson was named news editor and started in his position last week.

Nicholson, a native of Sherwood, holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of North Dakota. In the 1990s he worked as a reporter with the Devils Lake Journal and as a reporter and night city editor for the Minot Daily News. He spent the last 21 years as a newsman with the AP in Bismarck.

In addition to editing, Nicholson will report for the Tribune, with a focus on agriculture and outdoors stories.

Travis Svihovec has taken over as crime and courts reporter.

Svihovec, a native of Lemmon, S.D., has a bachelor's degree in agricultural journalism from South Dakota State University. He previously worked for the Mobridge (S.D.) Tribune as a sports writer, news editor, and special sections editor and photographer. He started with the Tribune as the obituary writer in November.

The Tribune also has hired Bilal Suleiman. His duties include handling obituaries and the Mandan News. He also hopes to do some reporting in the future.

Originally from Grand Forks, Suleiman moved to Bismarck in January to cover the 2019 legislative session through an internship with the North Dakota Newspaper Association. Before that, he attended the University of North Dakota, where he studied strategic communication and journalism.

The Tribune also has hired two interns for the summer, Owen Piehl and Miranda Stambler.

Stambler, originally from Walkersville, Md., moved to Fargo to attend North Dakota State University. In May, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism with minors in English and animal science. She also worked for the campus newspaper, The Spectrum, as the features editor. Her internship is funded by the North Dakota Newspaper Association.

Piehl is a recent graduate of Mandan High School, where he was editor-in-chief of the school's newspaper. He plans to attend NDSU in the fall and major in English and communication.
