A deer hunter at the Apple Creek Management Area shot and killed a mountain lion on the opening day of deer season.
Robert Timian, chief game warden for the North Dakota Department of Game and Fish, said the hunter shot the cat early Friday afternoon. A game warden picked up the mountain lion, which was taken to the department’s laboratory. He did not have the name of the hunter available.

“It’ll be weighed and measured and all that stuff now,” Timian said.
He said the mountain lion was legally taken and will be returned to the hunter when measurement and data collection is completed.
Timian said that while it is impossible to say for certain whether the mountain lion was the same one spotted several times earlier this week south of Bismarck, it does seem likely that it is the same animal.
Prairie Rose Elementary School kept students in at recess on Tuesday and Thursday after receiving reports of mountain lion sightings in the vicinity.
