A 20-year-old man has been charged with felony child abuse after a toddler was taken to a Bismarck hospital with a broken femur.

An affidavit says Bismarck police officers responded to the emergency room at CHI St. Alexius Health on Wednesday afternoon for a report of a 2-year-old with a broken femur.

The child's mother told officers that Antwan Alexander, of Bismarck, told her that he had hit the child. She said she observed swelling to the child's leg and took the child to the hospital.

Alexander reportedly told officers he accidentally fell on the child, then admitted he had hit the child multiple times.

An X-ray showed an "obvious complete fracture" of the child's upper left femur, the affidavit said.

At Alexander's initial appearance on Thursday, South Central District Judge Bruce Romanick set Alexander's bond at $10,000.
