Bismarck Tribune publisher Gary Adkisson.

The Bismarck Tribune welcomed a new publisher on Thursday.

Gary Adkisson, formerly publisher of The Sentinel in Carlisle, Pa., was named by Lee Enterprises to lead the Bismarck newspaper.

“Gary has an impressive record of accomplishment and has excelled in every area of our business,” said Julie Bechtel, a group publisher for Lee Enterprises, which owns the Bismarck Tribune. “He has great passion for strong local news and outstanding service to readers and advertisers.”

Adkisson, who began his duties Thursday and spent the day meeting with employees, said he is looking forward to building relationships with business, civic and charitable organizations in Bismarck-Mandan.

“There is nothing I enjoy more than meeting our readers and advertisers, and that will be my priority in the upcoming weeks and months,” he said.

Adkisson, 60, joined Lee Enterprises in 2014 after serving as general manager of The Paducah Sun in Paducah, Ky., since 2007.

He previously was regional publisher of three daily newspapers and 13 weekly publications at Brown Publishing in Delaware, Ohio. His career also includes positions as publisher at the Bluefield Daily Telegraph in Bluefield, W.Va.; the Weatherford Democrat in Weatherford, Texas; and Livermore Publishing in Mineral Wells, Texas.

A native of southeast Missouri, Adkisson began his career in 1977 as a circulation district manager at The Tennessean and Nashville Banner in Nashville while still a student at Welch College.

“Every place we’ve lived, we’ve really gotten involved in the community,” Adkisson said Thursday. “You just have to get involved, otherwise it never becomes home.”

Adkisson’s wife, Glenda, works as a registered nurse for an elementary school in Carlisle and will join him after finishing the semester. They have three adult children and six grandchildren.

The couple are avid bicyclists, and enjoy riding together on a tandem bicycle. They also participate in road races for charity.

“If you see a yellow tandem on the road and people looking like they’re lost, that’s probably us,” Adkisson said. “Although I don’t know how hard core we’re going to be with winter weather.”

Adkisson succeeds Dave Braton, who retired as Bismarck Tribune publisher in August.
