A former contractor charged with two felonies and three misdemeanors for projects he didn’t finish and for which he didn’t refund money was found guilty Tuesday in a jury trial in Morton County.

The case of Blain Ovind, 49, of Mandan, dates back several years. He reached an agreement with the state attorney general's office in 2013 that banned him from contract work until he completed or refunded money taken for projects. In 2014 and 2015 he was ordered to pay almost $170,000 to eight creditors after failing to complete the projects or refund them. Court documents also say he entered into more contracts in 2016 and 2017 while still banned from doing so.

The jury found Ovind guilty of two felony counts of construction fraud, two misdemeanor charges of acting as a contractor without a license, and a misdemeanor charge of disobedience of a judicial order, according to court documents.

Ovind’s sentencing will take place after a presentence investigation. Ovind represented himself in the trial. A telephone number for Ovind Construction is no longer valid.
