Improperly discarded smoking materials into flower planters resulted in small fires in Bismarck on Sunday and Tuesday.
The first fire, on a front porch on the 100 block of West Avenue A, was started in a plastic flower planter and resulted in damage to the porch planking. The second fire, on the 700 block of North Sixth Street, started in a wooden flower planter and damaged some cedar siding. Both incidents were ruled accidental by the Bismarck Fire Department.
The flower planters were filled with a potting mix, which typically contains combustible organic materials such as peat moss, sphagnum moss, coir, sawdust or shredded bark.
