The Dickinson State University Blue Hawk Stampede Rodeo scheduled for this weekend has been canceled due to ongoing concerns of the equine herpes virus.
The rodeo was planned for Saturday and Sunday at the Stark County Fairgrounds.
Several rodeos have been canceled due to the virus.
Last month, a Bowman horse named Lil Sis died after being infected with a type of equine herpes called equine herpesvirus-1, or EHV-1. The virus caused the horse to contract a neurologic disease, equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy, or EHM.
Susan Keller, the state veterinarian, said last week there have been about five lab-confirmed cases of EHV-1 in North Dakota, but only one of the EHM form.
