Century High School special education teacher Sara Bohrer, facing right, is embraced by her mom, Kathy Korte, after being recognized as Bismarck Public School's secondary Outstanding Teacher of the Year award on Monday. To the left is her husband, Matt, and their children Nora, 6, and Payton, 9. Bohrer is the coordinator for the school's peer-to-peer program, partnering student-mentors with students with disabilities. Bohrer sees the program rewarding for her to watch the students in class empowering their relationships beyond the classroom and after high school.

Century High School teacher Sara Bohrer has been named Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce's Secondary Education Outstanding Teacher of the Year.

Bohrer began as a elementary school teacher 10 years ago, but switched to special education four years ago, according to a chamber news release. In four years, she's created the Peer-to-Peer Leadership class at Century, which partners students with disabilities with peer mentors in and out of class.

Now in their 32nd year, the Outstanding Teacher of the Year awards are based on nominations and given to teachers in elementary, secondary and higher education. Two secondary teachers, one in Bismarck and one in Mandan, are recognized. A total of five awards are handed out.
