An Illinois man who Burleigh County authorities say had 30 pounds of marijuana in his car faces a felony charge that could send him to prison for 20 years if convicted.

Varun Mahajan, 41, of Glendale Heights, Ill., was stopped by a sheriff's deputy Sunday on Interstate 94 for traffic violations. The deputy noted several telltale signs of drug trafficking and requested a K-9 to sniff the vehicle, according to a police affidavit.

The dog’s indication led to a search of the vehicle, during which the deputy found 25 vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana, each weighing about 1.2 pounds, the affidavit said. The pot has a potential street value of $230,000, according to authorities.

Mahajan made his initial court appearance on Monday. He is being held in the Burleigh Morton Detention Center in lieu of $100,000 cash bail. No attorney is listed for him in court documents.
