February in Bismarck was the coldest for that month since 1979, according to the National Weather Service.
February 2019 had an average temperature of minus 0.4 degrees, said meteorologist Ken Simosko.
Bismarck's February 2019 was the fifth coldest on record for that statistic, after 1979, 1887, 1875 and record 1936 — which had an average temperature of minus 11.4 degrees.
"Hope we don't repeat it any time soon," Simosko said.
Meteorologists measure winter from Dec. 1 to the last day of February. Temperatures swung almost 90 degrees in that time frame for 2019.
Dec. 15 saw the high of 53. Jan. 30 had the low of minus 33.
Total snowfall from December through February was above average: 36.5 inches after 1.3 inches added Friday, Simosko said.
Bismarck receives an average of 26.3 inches snowfall.
And the low temps look to continue. Simosko said the weekend will see abnormally low temperatures with wind chills down to minus 40.
Friday marked the first day of meteorological spring.
