Elbow Room owners open new restaurant

Roundhouse, a gastropub-style restaurant, opened in downtown Bismarck last week.

Manager Jake Miller said the new restaurant is owned and operated by the owners of the Elbow Room bar and the two businesses are divided by a garage door that allows customers to crossover between establishments.

Miller describes the menu as "eclectic."

"I wanted to serve things that I like to eat," he said.

His favorites are the bánh mì pork sandwich and the New Orleans-style muffaletta sandwich.

"It goes really good with a cold beer," he said of the spicy meats on the muffaletta.

Other items include an open-faced thanksgiving sandwich served on a waffle made from stuffing, mozzarella stuffed deep fried risotto and a Maryland-style crab cake sandwich.

“I wanted to do stuff that was familiar but with a unique twist,” Miller said.

It's Roundhouse's goal to be "home cooking at its finest," Miller said.

“I’m not going to say it's a full scratch kitchen but pretty close," he said

And nothing on menu is over $13, making it a good lunch spot, Miller said.

In the coming weeks, Roundhouse will serve brunch on the weekends and breakfast during the week but still be a place for late-night food.

Hours will be 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. at Elbow Room and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. at Roundhouse, Miller said.

Roundhouse has a small open kitchen and seating for 90 people, as well as a semi-private room that can be rented.

The space on the southeast corner of Fifth Street and Main Avenue had housed offices before it was renovated for the restaurant.

“It was just like a big box,” Miller said, but now it boasts a bar and decor made from locally fabricated steel.

There’s tile throughout and an exposed brick wall harkening back to its days housing a car dealer.

At the bar there are 16 craft beers on tap and high-end gins and rums.

“I’m still pulling whiskeys out of the box,” Miller said, with the goal of having 100 to 120 to choose from.

Roundhouse employs about 20 people full time, Miller said.
