First Steps Learning Center is adding 2,150 square feet to its east Bismarck location.
Owner Steve Arnold said the extra space will allow for the enrollment of 45 more kids at 1910 E. Capitol Ave.
“When you have 200 people on a waiting list, you know there’s got to be a need and we know they want to come to First Steps,” he said. “It just felt like the right time if we were going to do it, get this done and get up and going.”
Arnold aims to have the facility ready in early September. He’ll have room for 16 infants and will expand his 1-year-old and 2-year-old age groups. Moving those children into the expansion area will free space for ages 3 through 5.
In addition to the expansion, the outside of the building and the existing space was remodeled and updated, Arnold said.
First Steps is hiring additional staff for the location and parents can sign up for the waiting list online at firststepsbismarck.com. Arnold said the plan is to hold an open house for the community in mid-September.
Day care hours are 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. First Steps also offers in-house programming, such as baseball, soccer, gymnastics and swim lessons.
First Steps has been in operation in the community for 35 years.

Braun purchased the former Auto Express at 1154 W. Divide Ave., across from Proximal 50.
“We’d been looking for the past two years on the north side,” Braun said, wanting to offer his company’s service to a what he describes as an underserved area of town.
Under Race Day’s ownership, the location has longer hours — open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday — which has doubled business.
“We do all preventative maintenance recommended by the manufacturer,” Braun said, from transmission maintenance, to radiators, to air filters.
And it’s Race Day’s goal to have oil change customers in and out within 10 minutes.
Race Day has been in operation in Bismarck since 2007 when it opened in south Bismarck.
