It was the first state championship for the Braves in 28 years. Bryan Kielpinski (17 points), Jordan Maurer (16) and Jordan Thilmony (11) all reached double figures for Mandan. Jason Horner of Mandan was named coach of the year.

20 YEARS AGO (1999): Almost half of the All-South Central Conference boys basketball team is made up of underclassmen. There are seven seniors on the 13-man team, which was chosen by SCC coaches. Napoleon and Steele-Dawson each placed two men on the team. Mark Roth and Caleb Ketterling represent Napoleon. Chad Brousseau and Clint Fallgatter are the Steele-Dawson honorees.

50 YEARS AGO (1969): Grand Forks Red River and Grand Forks St. James will clash for the Class A basketball title tonight at the University of North Dakota Fieldhouse. St. James defeated Fort Yates 72-67 in one semifinal and Red River overpowered Valley City 67-31 in the other. Everette Chasing Hawk was the high scorer for Fort Yates with 21 points.
