10 YEARS AGO (2009):Top-ranked Mandan's spell over Williston continues. Mandan edged the Coyotes 65-63 in overtime to win the championship in the West Region boys basketball tournament. The Braves have defeated Williston three times this season, each time by two points. Mandan's victory wasn't secure until Williston's C.J. Vinger missed on a 3-point attempt at the overtime buzzer.

20 YEARS AGO (1999): The University of North Dakota defeated North Dakota State 83-60 to win a slot in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight women's basketball tournament. The Sioux, who are seeking their third straight national title, improved to 28-1. Katie Richards of UND topped all scorers with 28 points. Her teammate, Kami Winger, grabbed 17 rebounds. Jayne Even scores 24 points for NDSU.

50 YEARS AGO (1969): Scranton came back in the final period to upset New England St. Mary's 51-48 in the District 32 basketball semifinals at Dickinson. Tom Schniekel paced the winners with 14 points. Lance Silha and Devin Ruggles added 11 apiece. Ron Roller and Les Schroeder tossed in 13 and 12 points, respectively, for St. Mary's.

TRIVIA ANSWER

Bismarck won the first North Dakota Class A boys basketball championship, defeating Mandan 17-15 in the 1933 title game.
