PLAYBACK

10 YEARS AGO (2009): Minot State's Justin Aberle with a 75 in the Bismarck State Open at Hawktree Golf Club. He led the Beavers to the men's team title. They shot a 307 to finish 14 strokes up on runner-up Dickinson State. Minot State's women won with a 381, 19 strokes better than second-place Jamestown College. Whitney Stanley of Minot and Caitlin Hurlock of Dickinson tied for the top spot in the women's tournament with 89s.

20 YEARS AGO (1999): Great defense, but all the talk was about the kickers after Bismarck's 3-0 overtime victory over Mandan at Faris Field. BHS kicker Doug Nassif accounted for the game's only points with a 22-yard field goal on the Demons' first overtime possession. Mandan was confronted on fourth down with a 24-yard attempt by Mike Klug in its turn with the ball. Klug's kick veered wide right, but just barely, to end the game.

50 YEARS AGO (1969): New England High School's football Tigers this week at Flasher and coach Harvey Stock will be testing a youthful squad. Still, Stock looks for improvement on last year's 2-4-1 mark with the return of 18 lettermen. Senior returnees are Mike Schatz, Doug Keller, Tracy Doe, Lowell Nester and Larry Lambourn.
