10 YEARS AGO (2009): Allison Schick pounded down 27 kills to lead Flasher into the finals of the Region 5 volleyball tournament at Center. Flasher downed New Salem 3-1. Center-Stanton defeated Turtle Lake-Mercer 3-1 in the other semifinal.

20 YEARS AGO (1999):  After more than a decade of jawing over the issue, girls and boys basketball seasons may be merged in South Dakota. The High School Activities Association board of directors has tentatively endorsed that idea. A final decision is expected in June after a series of meetings to work out the details.

50 YEARS AGO (1969): Senior halfback Cliff Maier was voted the most valuable player and the most valuable back at the conclusion of Linton's first season of independent 11-man football. Maier led the Lions in scoring with 50 points and rushing with 875 yards. Linton finished the season with a 5-3-1 record.

TRIVIA ANSWER

Coming out of Holy Cross University, Bob Cousy was drafted by the NBA's Tri-Cities Blackhawks but refused to report. He ended up with the Boston Celtics, with whom he won six NBC championships in 13 seasons en route to a spot in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. After a six-year retirement, he played seven games with the Cincinnati Royals, the team he was coaching, in 1969 at age 41. He coached the Royals in Cincinnati and Kansas City for four and a fraction seasons before retiring in 1973.
