10 YEARS AGO (2010): University of Mary 197-pounder Dusty Vliem was named wrestler of the week in the Northern Sun Conference. The senior from Lodgepole, S.D., picked up the lone Marauder win, a 44-second pin, in a dual loss to Upper Iowa, the nation's 11th-ranked team. Vliem, 11-2, is ranked third in NCAA Super Region 3.
20 YEARS AGO (2000): Ben Schmidt popped in 21 points as Mandan defeated Century 60-40 in West Region basketball at Mandan. Schmidt also pulled down nine rebounds for the winning Braves. Will Spencer scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Century.
50 YEARS AGO (1970): An estimated 3,000 spectators turned out at the Civic Center and saw Bismarck dealt its worst basketball defeat of the season, a 79-45 thrashing at the hands of Fort Yates. Junior center Bob Eaglestaff scored 22 points to pace the Warrior victory. Virgil Tiokasin hit for 21 more points. Bob Dahl scored 12 points for Bismarck.
