Mike S. Kraft, 85, Bismarck, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Feb. 25, 2019. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 2, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, 801 1st St. SE, Mandan, with The Rev. Kreitinger officiating. Burial will be held in the spring.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Bismarck Funeral Home, 3723 Lockport St, Bismarck, where a vigil service will begin at 7 p.m.

Mike was born March 29, 1933, the son of Sylvester and Frances (Moser) Kraft. He grew up on the family farm in Strasburg along with his 13 brothers and sisters.

Mike followed his brother and sister to California where he worked at Boeing and other various jobs, until he returned to the family farm in Strasburg to help with harvest. After harvest, while attending a dance, he met the love of his life, Marlys Ann Nelson, and they were united in marriage on May 9, 1960.

They initially made their home in California, where they owned and operated Winchell’s Donut Shop. During their time in California, the two oldest of seven children were born. Their strong family values eventually lead them closer to home. Initially they made their home in Aberdeen, S.D., where Mike worked for the local lumber yard.

Mike’s passion for tinkering would lead him to Bismarck, where he worked in appliance repair for several years, before starting Mike’s Appliance and Small Engine Repair. During this time, Mike and Marlys would have five more children. Mike was always looking for a new adventure and this time it was moving the family to a hobby farm in Lehr, where he continued with the appliance repair business and various jobs throughout the community.

A few years later, Mike and Marlys moved their family back to Bismarck, where he would finish his working career at the North Dakota State Penitentiary and retired in 1995.

Mike enjoyed music, dancing, playing cards with friends and most of all he loved spending time and sharing a meal, “especially dessert,” with family and friends.

Mike is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marlys; his children, Tom Kraft, Mandan, Dan (Devi) Kraft, Henderson, Nev., Sylvia (Melvin) Faris, Mandan, Cindy (Shannon) Schneider, Corey (Sheila) Kraft and Aaron (Yvette) Kraft, all of Bismarck; his grandchildren, Jamie (Randi) Kraft, Ashley Kraft, AJ Kraft, Jesica Soenjoto, Dustin Faris, Brandon (Leslie) Faris, Michael (Eliza) Faris, Maranda Faris, Andrea Faris, Courtney Schneider, Alexis (Hayden) Bauer, Amber Kraft, Austyn Kraft, Cambrya Kraft, Caylin Kraft; 10 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Viola (Val Vetter), Frances (Tom) Schmaltz, Jane Bosch, Helen McLeod, Lorraine Silvernagel, Jolene (Don) Hahne, Judy (Mick) Brick; his brothers, Victor (Linda) Kraft, Eugene (Mattie) Kraft; two sisters-in-law, Rose Kraft, Linda Kraft; and many nieces and nephews.
