Paul Fleckenstein Jr, 75, of Mandan, passed away Nov. 22, 2017, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck.

Mass of Christian burial was held Nov. 27 with the Rev. Shane Campbell and Monsignor Patrick Schumacher officiating. Interment took place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military committal services provided by the Mandan American Legion and the VFW.

Paul was born to Paul Sr. and Otillia (Herauf) Fleckenstein on Aug. 3, 1942, in the small town of Dodge, where he lived out his childhood. He attended high school at Assumption Abbey in Richardton, and in 1961 he joined the U.S. Army. On Sept. 11, 1963, he married the love of his life, Geraldine Huck, at St. Pius Church in Schefield. In 1968, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army as a sergeant. Following his service, Paul and Gerri moved to Dickinson and then lived in Missoula, Mont., for a few years. Later they ended up in Bismarck, where Paul started his career in the floor covering trade. He started a business known as Capital City Carpet in 1986.

Paul will be remembered for his hard working personality and his social spirit. He knew no stranger and had an outstanding memory. He also had a special talent with birds. Known as a bird whisperer among friends and family he often took sick birds under his wing and into his home, feeding them and nursing them back to health.

Paul will be missed by his beloved wife, Gerri; sons, Clint J (Stacy) Fleckenstein of Bismarck, and Paul J Fleckenstein of Aurora, S.D.; two grandchildren, P.J. Fleckenstein and Johnathon Fleckenstein; sister, Paula Schmidt of Dickinson; brothers, Leo (Rosella) Fleckenstein, Peter (Lucy) Fleckenstein, and Larry (Judy) Fleckenstein, all of Bismarck; and sisters-in-law, Rita Zinner of High Point, Ga., and Kathy Fleckenstein of La Crosse, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Eva (Simon) Scheett, Rose (John) Klein, and Theresa Schmidt; brother-in-law, Jim Schmidt; and brothers, Tony Fleckenstein and August Fleckenstein.
