John A. Hatzenbuhler, 97, Mandan, passed away Aug. 4, 2017, at Miller Pointe in Mandan, surrounded by his family.

Mass of Christian burial was held Aug. 8 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with Rev. Nick Schneider as celebrant. Burial was at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW No. 707 and American Legion Post No. 40.

John was born Nov. 13, 1919, to Anton and Julia (Scheetz) Hatzenbuhler on the family farm in Odense where he was raised and educated. He married Ann M. Schmidt on June 3, 1946, and together they had five children.

John worked on the farm from 1946 to 1956 until he moved to Solen and purchased the bar which he named Lucky Strike Bar. In 1976, he retired and moved to Mandan. John and his wife enjoyed traveling with the family to California and Laughlin, Nev. They also enjoyed going to Las Vegas and the Prairie Knights Casino. John was very active at Christ the King as a Eucharistic Minister and as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also participated with Meals on Wheels. John was a member of the VFW No. 707 and American Legion Post No. 40. John was a very gentle, kind and loving person. He was a wonderful father and grandfather.

John will be deeply missed by daughters, Evie Berger, Carlene (Don) Friesz, Karen (Leon) Glasser, all of Mandan; son, John, Mandan; daughter-in-law, LaVonne Hatzenbuhler, Mandan; brothers, Tony (Helen), Matt (Ann), Christ, all of Mandan; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ann (2016); son, Donald; son-in-law, Gene Berger; sisters, infant sister Margaret and Margaret Zuger; brothers, Fred and Joe
