McKenzie Ulrich — Girls tennis
During the month of May, McKenzie Ulrich was 9-7 in singles and 2-4 in doubles for an overall record of 11-11. Though the quantity of wins and her overall record may not show it, McKenzie was instrumental in the team’s success at the end of the season. At the West Fargo Invite, a tournament in which all 19 teams in the state compete, McKenzie went 3-2 to place sixth at No. 3 singles. At the end of the season, we played Dickinson in a match the team needed to win in order to avoid the play-in match for the regional tournament. McKenzie came up with two big wins but none bigger than her singles win to clinch the match 5-4 for the Braves. In the first round of the West Region team tournament, McKenzie again got a huge win for the team in its 3-2 victory over Bismarck High. She continued her winning ways in the state qualifying match against Jamestown with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 singles victory to propel the Braves into the state tournament with a 4-1 win. During the individual tournament, McKenzie almost toppled the No. 7 seed in the first round of the tournament but fell 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. When it was all said and done, she had a 2-2 record, losing out one match shy of the state qualifying match. During the state team tournament, McKenzie was part of another huge win that helped the team edge out Fargo Davies 3-2 and reach the consolation finals and an eventual sixth-place finish. All season long, McKenzie has been one of our hardest-working players on the team. She showed great improvement throughout the season and was a reliable player for us down the stretch.
