Walker recognized

Jacy Walker, a choir teacher at Simle Middle School and Legacy High School in Bismarck, has been selected as the 2018 North Dakota American Choral Directors Association’s New Choral Director of the Year.

The award goes to music teachers who have taught for five or fewer years. She was nominated by colleagues in the Bismarck Public Schools.

Lunde advances

Analena Lunde, an assistant professor of nursing, was named Dickinson State University’s 2018 Nurse Educator of the Year and has the opportunity to compete at the state level.

The award was developed by the Nursing Students Association of North Dakota to recognize outstanding nursing educators and to stimulate interest in the profession of nursing educators.

Junior and senior nursing students vote anonymously to nominate faculty members for the award.

Other nominees this year at DSU were Teresa Bren and Lucy Meyer.

Lunde has been teaching Advanced Concepts 2-Child Health, Nursing Role, and clinicals for junior and senior nursing students for the past three years.

Gelbvieh success

Prairie Hills Gelbvieh, Gladstone, exhibited the reserve champion pen of three Gelbvieh bulls in the Gelbvieh and Balancer Pen Show Jan. 7 at the National Western Stock Show in Denver.

The pen consisted of one February 2017 and two March 2017 bulls and had an average weight of 1,159 pounds with an average weight per day of age of 3.7 pounds. This set of bulls had average ultrasound scan data of 14.09 square inches for ribeye, 3.34 percent IMF and 0.26 inches of back fat.

Sixteen pens were exhibited at the show. Eldon Krebs, Gordon, Neb., judged the pen bull show.

Mandan scholarship

Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma is offering a $500 scholarship to a female graduate of Mandan High School who is majoring in a field of education and enrolling in her junior or senior year of college in the fall of 2018.

Applications are available at the MHS counseling office and at college education departments. The application deadline is April 6.

Auxiliary donates

CHI St. Alexius Health’s Auxiliary presented the Medical Center with $25,000 during the auxiliary’s annual business meeting.

The 53 members host several fundraisers a year and volunteer their time to run the hospital’s gift shop. In 2017, items purchased through donations from the auxiliary included wheelchairs, a power exam chair, an addition for the Gift of Life wall and baby news discharge books.

Schmidt retires

Vickie Schmidt has retired after 18 years at the Bismarck Public Library.

Schmidt worked in the bookmobile department, preparing material for the collection and logged many miles while serving people in Burleigh County.
