Services for John William Newby, Calumet, Okla., will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at Red Rock Methodist Church, El Reno, Okla., with the Rev. Matthew Franks officiating. Interment will be at Red Rock Cemetery.
Mr. Newby died in a farm accident on Sept. 23, 2012. He was born Oct. 5, 1979, in Weatherford, Okla., to Larry and Teena (Blagg) Newby. He was a life-long resident of Calumet, Okla., but spent some high school years in Bismarck, graduating from Century High School. He later attended Redlands Junior College in El Reno. John married Trisha Skjeie on Nov. 17, 2000, in El Reno, Okla.
John was employed by BNSF Railroad as a track inspector. When away from his railroad job, John could be found involved in all facets of the family farm operation. John loved farming and wasn’t afraid of hard work.
John loved his family and friends. With his layed-back demeanor and abundance of sense of humor, one could always be prepared to get a witty comment.
John was active in the community as a member of the Maple School Board, Maple Rural Water Board and Red Rock United Methodist Church. He was active with kids in the local 4-H club and was loved by all who knew him and was referred to as Uncle John by many who where not his own. No one ever hesitated to call John, because they knew he would always be willing to lend a helping hand.
Although John enjoyed all sports, football was his favorite, even while playing basketball he was nicknamed “nose guard.” John played football in North Dakota but because red dirt was rooted deep in his blood, he would rub “Oklahoma Red Dirt” on his football uniform for luck. John also had a love for wrestling.
