93-year-old World War II Navy veteran Alex Schafer was honored in an informal ceremony as part of the hospice program's "We Honor Veterans" service. Schafer was in the service from 1942-1945 and manned a 24mm gun and was also a cook aboard the USS San Carlos in the Pacific Theater. From October 23-26, 1944, Seaman 1st Class Schafer took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf near a chain of Phillipine islands. The battle is considered to be the largest naval battle of World War II.
