Originally slated to open as Sergio's Mexican Restaurant, a threatened lawsuit forced owner Reza Kamranian to cover the sign with question marks and open the restaurant on September 8, 1987 as the "Neon Parrot Tropical Restaurant."
However, lawyers informed him that a Minnesota restaurant already had a trademark on the name. So, a contest to name the restaurant was conceived.
In November of 1987, a contest winner was announced and awarded a free meal every week for a year, but Kamranian decided to stick with the name Sergio's "and see what happens."
Sergio's closed in 2004 and was remodeled and opened as Famous Dave's that same year.
