New Salem-Almont captured its first region dual tournament championship with a 45-34 victory over Bowman County in the Region 4 title dual Saturday at the Beulah High School gym.
The Holsteins rolled to a 30-0 lead and never looked back. Clay Gerhardt (126 pounds), Tayt Wolding (132), Ty Wolding (138), Chauncey Dittus (145) and Josh Irwin (152) started the dual with successive pins, and after the Bulldogs got back-to-back victories from Jacob Ruggles (major decision at 160) and Clayton Mattern (pin at 170), Isaiah Huus (182) recorded New Salem-Almont's sixth fall to make it 36-10.
Pins by Mitch Stuber (195), Beau Jeffers (220) and Nate Boehm (285) pulled Bowman County within eight, 36-28, with three matches remaining, but the Holsteins put it away with Cole Gerhardt's decision at 106, and Cody Irwin's pin at 113.
In the semifinals, New Salem-Almont picked up seven pins on the way to a 63-18 win over Killdeer, and Bowman County trailed Hettinger-Scranton 20-10 after seven matches, but rallied for a 40-29 victory.
New Salem-Almont and Bowman County will compete in the Class B dual state tournament Feb. 14-15 at the Fargodome.
