Luke Mellmer has stepped down after seven seasons with the Mandan High School wrestling program, the last five as head coach.
Mellmer has been named the new head wrestling coach at St. Mary's Central High School in Bismarck.
Mandan is coming off a third-place finish at the state tournament, its highest finish under Mellmer's leadership. Previously, Mellmer led the Braves to two fourth-place finishes, a sixth and an eighth. Mandan placed third in the state duals in 2017 and fourth in 2018. The Braves didn't qualify for the dual tournament in the just-completed season.
"We will miss Luke's excitement and passion that he brought daily to the sport," Mandan activities director Mark Wiest said in a prepared release. "Coach Mellmer built a family with his wrestling teams. He was fully invested in each of his athletes."
Wiest said Mellmer benefited the Mandan wrestling program at all levels.
"I appreciate what Luke has done not only at the high school level, but through our entire program, specifically with the elementary and middle school levels," Wiest said.
Mellmer's resignation is effective immediately. A search for a replacement is underway.
