Robert Clayton Pope, 72, Mandan, passed away peacefully on Dec. 30, 2018, into eternal life after a lengthy illness.
Mass of Christian burial was held Jan. 4 at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Bob was born on May 13, 1946, to Thomas and Eva (Gress) Pope, in Mandan. He joined the U.S. Navy on May 7, 1969, and was honorably discharged on May 6, 1973. He served on the ship USS Benjamin Stoddert. He worked in various positions that included the city of Mandan, Morton County and Spirit of Life Church.
Bob was a kind, gentle, humble and soft-spoken man with a deep faith, who loved the Lord, his family and church. He enjoyed long walks on the prairie with his dog, Bella, yoga and cross country skiing in the winter. Bob always had a project. He worked on his home and machinery and would always lend a helping hand to others. Often you’d find him listening to music, especially the Christian stations, and talk radio. When gardening he would preserve his own fruit and vegetables and would grow flowers and wildflowers, which he loved. Always a generous man, he would give away his produce from his garden and the eggs from the chickens and ducks he raised. He also raised a beautiful peacock. Bob was an active member at Spirit of Life Church, in the choir, the soup kitchen and as a custodian. He was an artistic man who was greatly loved and respected and will be dearly missed.
Bob is survived by his four sisters, Sharon Zander, Mandan, Anita Baillie, Bismarck, Laura Pope and her husband, Larry Anderson, Albuquerque, N.M., and Laine Pope, Mandan; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and his dog, Bella.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
