Holden Howard, an eighth-grader at Mandan Middle School, correctly spelled “cafeteria” to take first place.
Finishing second was Anna Palmer, a seventh-grader from Hebron.
Emily Canen, a sixth-grader at Hebron School, and Mya Johnson, a sixth-grader from Mandan, finished third and fourth, respectively.
Twenty-four students from Flasher, Glen Ullin, Hebron, Mandan Middle School and Sweet Briar competed for awards on Feb. 9. A 40-word written test and 20 vocabulary words were used to determine the eight finalists for the oral round.
