Volk involved in research

Kate Volk, a senior at North Dakota State University, has been participating in research.

Volk, who is from Mandan and majoring in biological sciences, helped on a study of cover crops before working in plant research with assistant professor Jill Hamilton’s Common Gardens project.

Volk helps study how plant populations grow and evolve in different climates, and how the plants respond to climate changes. The goal is to determine which seed variation will thrive.

Three included in Honors Day

Three students from Mandan were recognized as scholarship recipients for 2018-19 during the Honors Day program at North Dakota State University.

• Margaret Beach, daughter of Christopher and Jane Beach, Mandan, received the Jean Marie Mudge Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,500. Beach is a freshman majoring in music education.

• Marissa Koppy, daughter of Steve and Francie Koppy, Mandan, received the Alfred G. Arvold Scholarship in the amount of $1,100. Koppy is a senior majoring in theater arts with a minor in sociology. Her activities at NDSU include Theatre NDSU.

• Elyssa Bickford, daughter of Ray and Sharon Bickford, Mandan, received the NDSU Bison Arts Scholarship. Bickford is a senior majoring in theater performance. Her activities at NDSU include the Bison Arts Singers and Theatre NDSU.

Agents achieve in insurance

Mandan agents for North Dakota Farmers Union Insurance were among top producers for the company in October.

Dave Berger was the top producer of auto insurance premiums.

Top-5 producers included Phil Halvorson, Lewis Schock and John Sackman, supplemental insurance premiums; and Courtney Schauer, supplemental insurance premiums, health insurance premiums, life insurance premiums and annuities.
