Tesoro refinery in Mandan

The Mandan refinery, shown here in 2016, began operations in 1954 and has a capacity of 71,000 barrels of oil per day, according to its company website. The facility manufactures gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, heavy fuel oils and liquefied petroleum gas. Refined products are trucked and railed from Mandan and also shipped east via pipeline to supply the Jamestown area, eastern North Dakota and Minnesota.

An odor blew into town from the Mandan refinery for about an hour on Monday. While perhaps foul smelling, officials say it wasn’t harmful.

Refinery spokesman Ron Day said the odor came from a chemical called ammonium disulfide that was being transferred from tanks into the refinery’s processing sewer.

“We have a deodorizer we use, but it still wasn’t enough,” he said, adding that a call was made to alert county officials of the smell.
