Halberstadt's ND, a menswear store based in Fargo, is moving into the retail space previously occupied by Montana Furniture and Mercantile at 508 E. Main Ave. in downtown Bismarck.

The storefront of Rick Becker’s Gulch Block development won’t be sitting empty.

A menswear store is moving into the Montana Furniture and Mercantile space at 508 E. Main Ave. in downtown Bismarck.

Halberstadt’s ND has been casually looking for space in Bismarck to add to its fleet of Fargo stores for a couple years. The downtown space had the “vibe” they were looking for, according to store manager Alex Dahl, who expects, by mid-May, the company’s third store will open.

“Once we found the space, we just knew it was right,” Dahl said of the 3,800-square-foot storefront.

The family-owned Halberstadt’s has been in the Fargo-Moorhead community for more than 25 years, first in West Acres Mall and then downtown on Broadway. Being in Bismarck will give the company a central location in the state from which to reach a broader customer base to the west.

Many customers have been willing to drive from Bismarck or Minot to the stores in Fargo. Dahl said maybe even more will be willing to stop in Bismarck.

“The chance to expand to Bismarck and become a part of that retail climate means a lot,” managing partner Barry Gruchow said in a statement.

The store carries suits for special occasions — prom and weddings — as well as everyday casual professional wear, such as sport shirts and slacks. Contemporary styles as well as more classic options will be on hand.

“We cater to pretty much everyone,” Dahl said of brands such as Johnston & Murphy, Hart Schaffner Marx, St. Croix, AG Jeans and Stacy Adams.

Tentative hours for the store are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The store will employ four or five full- and part-time employees.
