An estimated 400 barrels of produced water and 200 barrels of oil leaked from a tank in McKenzie County.
Produced water is a mixture of saltwater and oil that can contain drilling chemicals.
The incident occurred about 11 miles northeast of Grassy Butte on Sunday and was reported the next day, according to the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality. The cause was not immediately determined.

The tank is on a well pad operated by White Rock Oil & Gas LLC. The spill equates to 16,800 gallons of produced water and 8,400 gallons of oil. Most remained on the well pad, but an undetermined amount impacted badlands terrain, the department said.
State officials are inspecting the site and will continue to monitor the investigation and remediation.
