A fire and brine spill occurred over the weekend at an oil well site in Williams County, the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division reported Monday.

Inspectors believe the fire was caused by a lightning strike, a division spokeswoman said.

Whiting Oil and Gas Corp. owns the well site where the incident happened Saturday. The company reported that 280 barrels, or 11,760 gallons of brine, spilled. The fluid was contained to the area around the tank where the spill occurred.

Brine is salty water that comes up alongside oil and gas at wells.

The Oil and Gas Division will monitor cleanup.
