An equipment failure caused about 960 barrels, or 40,320 gallons, of brine to spill at a saltwater disposal well in McKenzie County on Monday, according to the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division.

Continental Resources reported the spill at a site about 10 miles northwest of Watford City. The contamination was contained at the well site and the brine has been recovered, the company reported.

The potential cause of the incident was a connection leak at the tank, said Katie Haarsager, spokeswoman for the Oil and Gas Division.

A state inspector has been to the site and will monitor cleanup.
