An equipment failure caused a brine and oil spill Thursday in McKenzie County, but the contamination was contained to the well site, according to the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division.

White Owl Energy Services reported about 350 barrels, or 14,700 gallons, of produced water and 25 barrels, or 1,050 gallons, of oil spilled at a saltwater disposal well about 8 miles northeast of Keene.

The spill was caused by a plug on a frac tank that failed, said Katie Haarsager, spokeswoman for the Oil and Gas Division. Produced water, or brine, is a waste byproduct of oil and gas production.

Cleanup at the site is underway. A state inspector has been to the site and will monitor additional cleanup.
