OPEN YOUR HEART
nd

9AN2NUAL

The 92nd consecutive annual Open Your Heart
campaign for families in need in Bismarck and Burleigh
County at Christmas is underway! The Legionnaires of
Loyd Spetz Post No 1 of the American Legion have led
this community supported Christmas charity for families
in need in Bismarck and Burleigh County every year
since our 1st campaign in December 1930. Open Your
Heart helps people every year because of the thousands
of volunteers and contributors who so faithfully work
with us to make Christmas brighter for these families.

Financial contributions in any amount can now be made to Open Your Heart by making your check
payable to Open Your Heart and by mailing it to: Open Your Heart, PO Box 753, Bismarck ND 58502-0753.
You can now make contributions online by visiting our new website www.openyourheart.us where we
now accept donations through
Checks or cash or non-perishable, non-damaged and not out of date food items can be delivered to the
American Legion office in the AMVETS Building at 2402 Railroad Avenue.
This Saturday, December 4th, in the south end of Kirkwood Mall KFYR 550 AM Radio from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00
p.m. will be holding its 35th consecutive annual live on air broadcast. You can deliver your checks or cash
and food items to the volunteers waiting there to receive your donations. In its first 34 years the KFYR 550 AM
Radio broadcast has raised $677,265. We are grateful to all the on air personalities and staff of KFYR 550 AM
Radio and iHeartMedia!
Special THANKS go to the wonderful students, teachers and staff of the Bismarck Public Schools who each
year donate an enormous amount of non-perishable food to Open Your Heart. Through their gifts these
marvelous students learn lifelong lessons of the joy and importance of charitable giving to help people in need!
On Friday, December 17th at 8:00 a.m. in the Exhibit Hall D of the Bismarck Civic Center volunteers will sort
all of the donated food and stack it with other purchased food on tables, and they will count the number of
items per table. That evening the doors to the Exhibit Hall D will open at 6:30 p.m. and at 7:00 p.m. hundreds of
volunteers will fill the baskets for each family.
On Saturday morning, December 18th, the perishable food
items will be delivered to the Exhibit Hall D at 6:30 a.m. At
7:00 a.m. volunteers will show up to begin the final loading of
the food baskets for each family. At 7:30 a.m. volunteers with
their own vehicles will drive into the warmth of the Exhibit Hall
D and turn off their engines while volunteers load them up with
all of the food baskets for one or more families. When all the
vehicles are loaded, the volunteers will drive out and deliver
them to the families making Christmas brighter for them all,
while another group of volunteers will drive into the Exhibit
Hall D to repeat the process until all the food baskets have
been delivered. The 92nd Open Your Heart campaign
should be wrapped up around 10:30 a.m.
