10 YEARS AGO (2007): Bismarck sophomore Grant Bakke claimed his first state singles title, defeating Michael Kraft of Grand Forks Red River 6-2, 6-4 in the finals of the state boys tennis tournament at Grand Forks. Bakke, who didn't place at last year's state tournament, won eight of the nine sets he played over the weekend. A week earlier he won all eight sets he played at the West Region tournament.

20 YEARS AGO (1997): ): Faced with mounting debt and uncertainty about the future of the Prairie League, the Grand Forks Varmints may be benched in favor of a collegiate league team. "Right now, the most likely option is that a third party would operate a Northwoods League team in Grand Forks next summer," said Jack Geller, president of the Varmints.

50 YEARS AGO (1967): Dennis Dinius scored three touchdowns to lead Hebron to a 24-7 football victory at Scranton. Dinius scored on runs of one and 65 yards and on a 40-yard pass from Kerry Richardson. Frank Brown caught a 42-yard pass from Lance Sihla for the only Scranton touchdown.
