10 YEARS AGO (2007): Being on an NFL practice squad meant Greg Eslinger wasn't getting the salary or benefits accorded a player on a team roster -- but it did allow him freedom. Any team that wanted to sign Eslinger could, and the Cleveland Browns have announced that they are taking a chance on the Bismarck native. Eslinger was released by Denver just before the regular season began and assigned him to the practice squad.

20 YEARS AGO (1997): New England-Regent won its third straight state nine-man football championship and extended its winning streak to 35 games, defeating Rolette-Wolford 16-14 at the Fargodome. Justin Jung scored on a one-yard run and Brian Erickson caught a 35-yard pass from Nathan Schatz to account for the two NE-R touchdowns.

50 YEARS AGO (1967): Coach Gary Melling characterizes Mandan's basketball prospects as "pretty bleak" as he looks ahead to the coming season. The defending state champion Braves have four returning lettermen, but only Rick Norton returns with meaningful playing time. Other returning lettermen are Doug Mork, Fred Landgrebe and Gerry Caya.
