ST. MARY'S HIRES GIRLS SOCCER, TENNIS COACHES

St. Mary's has hired Jordan Pearce as its girls soccer coach and Catherine Gibbens as girls tennis coach.

Pearce played soccer at the University of Mary. He's been an assistant coach for the Saints girls team and Century boys team. He's also coached for Dakota United Soccer Club and is currently its executive director.

Gibbens was an all-conference tennis player at U-Mary in 2014. She is currently a fourth-grade teacher at Cathedral Elementary School.

BRUINS 3, BOBCATS 2

Jaden Shields scored two third-period goals, including the game-winner with 17 seconds remaining, as the Austin Bruins rallied from two goals in arrears to knock the Bismarck Bobcats out of a share of first place in the NAHL Central Division.

Nick Woodward’s first goal of the season, coming off assists from Grant Johnson and Joseph Mancuso at 16:38 of the first period, gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead after one period.

Adam Stacho’s 10th goal of the season, at 4:41 of the second, gave Bismarck a two-goal cushion.

Dante Sheriff got the Bruins on the board late in the second period and he assisted on Shields’ equalizer at 14:04 of the third.

Alex Schilling made 28 saves in goal for Austin, while Johnny Roberts stopped 30 shots for Bismarck.

The teams meet again tonight at 7:15 p.m. at the VFW Sports Center.

GRAND FORKS – Austin Poganski scored a pair of first-period goals to lead the University of North Dakota hockey team to a 4-3 win over Western Michigan in the opening game of a weekend NCHC hockey series at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Poganski scored the first two of UND’s three first-period goals – both on the power play – helping the hosts take a 3-2 lead after the first 20 minutes.

Ludvig Hoff’s even-strength tally at 15:37 of the first gave North Dakota a 3-1 lead.

Collin Adams added a second-period goal for UND.

Dawson DiPietro, Brett Van Os and Wade Allison scored goals for the Broncos.

Cam Johnson made 18 saves for North Dakota while Ben Blacker stopped 25 shots for Western Michigan.
