COLLEGE CANCELLATIONS

U-MARY BASEBALL, SOFTBALL

University of Mary athletics is again feeling the effects of a late-arriving spring, but this time it isn't due to local conditions.

With a winter storm expected to sweep across the Upper Midwest, U-Mary's home baseball and road softball games scheduled this weekend have been canceled.

Predictions of up to 18 inches of snow in southern Minnesota will keep Southwest Minnesota State from making the trip to Bismarck for a four-game weekend baseball series.

The U-Mary softball team, which had games scheduled at the University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State, will also be idled due to travel considerations.

On Tuesday the Marauder softball team is due to play at Minnesota-Crookston. The baseball team hopes to return to action on Wednesday at Sioux Falls.

The football and soccer teams hope to play as scheduled. The Marauder spring football game is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the MDU Resources-Community Bowl. On Sunday, the men's soccer team will play an exhibition match against the Dakota Fusion at 1 p.m. at the Bowl.

HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS

BASEBALL, SOFTBALL, GOLF SETBACKS

Unplayable site conditions have already forced postponement of several local high school contests scheduled for next week.

In baseball, Century's Tuesday games with St. Mary's, Bismarck's Tuesday games at Williston and Century's Thursday game doubleheader at Williston have been postponed or canceled.

Legacy's Tuesday softball games at Williston, Mandan's Tuesday twin bill at Minot and Century's Friday softball doubleheader at Williston have also been wiped away.

The Turtle Mountain Invitational golf tournament slated April 21 at Dunseith has also been scratched.

WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

GILLETTE MOVING TO U-MARY

After a season at Montana State University, Coral Gillette has decided to transfer to the University of Mary.

Gillette, a second-team all-state player as a senior, played two basketball seasons at Bismarck High School. She averaged 15.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists as a senior. She shot 42 percent on 3-pointers, connecting on 89 shots from beyond the arc.

Last season Gillette, a six-foot guard, played in 14 games as a true freshman at Montana State.

U-Mary coach Rick Neumann also announced Afton Bartol, a 6-2 forward from Beaver Dam, Wis., has committed to play for the Marauders.

Bartol helped Beaver Dam to two Wisconsin state championships, earning conference player of the year honors as a senior. Last season she averaged 10.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. She shot 61.3 percent from the floor.
