Saints, Majettes to meet for region title

Before every match, St. Mary’s tennis coach Sandy Wald-Clooten likes to share a quote of the day with her players. On Thursday, she told them John McEnroe’s quote, “I’ll let my racquet do the talking.”

The Saints took that message to heart and earned a spot in the West Region tournament championship dual by picking up a 3-2 win over Mandan and a 4-1 win over Bismarck High at the Capital Racquet and Fitness Center.

“I thought was appropriate for today, and they went out and they did it,” Wald-Clooten said.

The top-seeded Saints swept their singles matches in the two victories, with Caitlyn Bakke, Alicia Beck and Mary Roller each picking up a pair of straight-set victories.

“I was a little disappointed in our doubles matches against Mandan, but I understand what teams are going to do against us,” Wald-Clooten said. “Teams know we’re going to go strong in singles, and they’re going to put their best players in doubles and try to get a win from us there.”

Bakke, St. Mary’s top singles player, posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mandan’s Barbara Senger, and a hard-fought 6-3, 6-1 win over the Demons’ Tyne Oberlander. Beck and Roller were also sharp in a pair of victories.

“Our singles players, they come through for us all the time. But we need the doubles players to come through, too. I was pleased with what I saw in the second match. They stepped up,” Wald-Clooten said.

Mandan got a pair of doubles wins against St. Mary’s, but the Saints bounced back against Bismarck.

“Catherine (Mahrer) and Erin (Benz) played well together,” Wald-Clooten said. “Especially considering they haven’t really played together all year.”

Mahrer was limited in playing time due to an ankle injury, but the senior responded to her chance, teaming up with Benz for a 6-2, 6-4 win over Rachel Schmacher and Kayla Steffes.

The other semifinal matchup went down to the final match on the court as second-seed Century battled third-seed Minot.

Century had a 2-1 lead going into the final two matches, No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. The Magicians’ Ban Dodin defeated Courtney Brackin 6-4, 6-3 to even up the match.

Minot’s Katie Wilson and Jenna Coggins defeated Century’s Paige Fettig and Rachael Elhardt in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to give Minot a berth in the state tournament and a shot at St. Mary’s in the regional final.

Rain rearranged the schedule for the tournament, moving things indoors and pushing back the championship and state-qualifying matches to this morning. The state-qualifiers, with Williston taking on Century and Dickinson faceing BHS, will begin at 7 a.m., followed by the title match.

Individual competition in the singles and doubles draws will begin around 1 p.m. Tournament officials hope they can play outdoors and indoors by then.
