DEVILS LAKE - Bismarck's defense smothered Devils Lake, limiting the Firebirds to under 100 yards of total offense in a 39-0 rout in an inter-region football matchup Saturday.
The top-ranked Demons, who improved to 3-0, didn't allow any yards through the air.
"Defensively we played extremely well," Bismarck coach Mark Gibson said. "We had a lot of three-and-outs, and we got our offense some great field position.
"... Jared Haug played very well on the defensive line, Brennan Fetch was great at linebacker for us, and I thought our entire secondary did a nice job of covering."
The Bismarck offense did what it needed to do. Layne Johs ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Ben Jolliffe passed for 95 yards and two touchdowns.
That wasn't enough to satisfy Gibson, who looked ahead to Bismarck's showdown against No. 2 Century on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Community Bowl.
"We were very sloppy again," Gibson said. "The big concern was we took a lot of penalties. There are some things we obviously have to get better at. ... We're going to go right into the fire with Century."
