FARGO — Tonya Dvorak and Whitney Thomas turned in strong finishes to their stellar high school careers on Saturday.

For Dvorak and the St. Mary’s Saints, it came in a season-ending win. St. Mary’s capped its best campaign in years, beating Legacy 70-45 in the third-place game of the Class A state tournament at Sanford Health Athletic Complex in Fargo.

“It’s amazing. It’s not exactly the game we wanted to be playing in, but it’s a great way for our season to end,” Dvorak said. “When we look back on the season, we can be really proud of what we accomplished.”

Both Dvorak and Thomas were named to the all-tournament team.

Dvorak totaled 17 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and a blocked shot. The 6-foot-2 senior said she was looking for her shot at the behest of her coach.

“During practice coach (Shannon Copas) said I was being quote, “too passy” and that I needed to be more aggressive,” she said, smiling. “So, I took that to heart and tried to get a few more shots up.”

Dvorak was joined in double figures by fellow seniors Sydney Smith (17) and Kaitlyn Wanner (10). Taylor Gerving, a junior, also had a strong game with 10 points, 5 assists and 4 steals.

“It’s been an amazing season for us seniors,” Dvorak said. “I wouldn’t have wanted to be with any other group of girls.”

Getting to state seemed far-fetched for Legacy when the opening ball was tipped. But when March rolled around the Sabers were playing their best.

“I’m super proud of our team. We came a long way from the beginning of the season,” said Thomas, Legacy’s lone senior. “Our ultimate goal was just to make it to state. To get to the state semifinal was a huge achievement for four team.”

Thomas did as she has all season and stuffed the stat sheet. Thomas, who plans to NDSU next season, finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

“I knew these were my last couple of games, so I just wanted to give it my all,” Thomas said. “It was a fun season. There are a lot of things our team can feel good about.”

Taryn Allmaras added 11 points and five rebounds for the Sabers.
