FARGO — Bismarck and West Fargo advanced to the consolation final in the state Class A volleyball tournament by much different avenues on Friday.

West Fargo blanked Fargo Davies 3-0 to move on to the fifth-place match and Bismarck prevailed in a 3-2 squeaker against Devils Lake.

Bismarck and Devils Lake battled to the bitter end in three of the five games in their 22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 17-15 consolation semifinal.

BHS appeared to be on Easy Street in the fifth game after sprinting off to a 9-3 lead. Devils Lake clawed its way back, though, pulling even at 14-all and 15-all on kills by Kyleigh Toso. The Demons finally put Devils Lake away on a kill by Kiaya Schwab.

Senior Lauryn Andre had a terrific match for the Demons, cranking out 17 kills. Courtney Hawkinson and Kiaya Schwab followed with nine kills each, and Alexis Heiser tallied eight. Chiara Olson racked up 10 kills for Devils Lake. Mattea Vetsch Toso were credited with 9 kills apiece for Devils Lake.

Bismarck and West Fargo meet for fifth place at 1 p.m. today. Devils Lake and Fargo Davies play for seventh at 11 a.m.

West Fargo was dominant in its win over Fargo Davies, leading the vast majority of the match.

The Packers led from the blocks to the tape while winning the first game 25-21. In the second game, Davies took a 5-4 lead, which lasted only until the Packers went ahead to stay at 9-8. The Eagles’ only lead in the third game was 1-0.

With 5-foot-9 freshman Erin Binstock leading the way with five blocks, West Fargo turned back 18 Eagle shots. The Packers had a good day at the service line, as well, swatting 10 aces with six service errors. Kalli Hegerle had four of those aces.

West Fargo improved to 33-2 with the win, its 26th in the last 27 matches. The Packers earlier defeated the Eagles 3-1 in an October match at Davies.
