The description of Dakota Wizards' first-round draft choice Curtis Withers sounds pretty good: Ben Wallace with a better offensive game and a good sense of humor.
It was Wizards' coach Rory White who compared Withers to the former Detroit Pistons star after selecting Withers with the 11th overall pick in Thursday's D-League draft. The 6-foot-8 power forward out of Charlotte said he's heard that comparison before.
As for the personality profile, that comes from Withers himself.
"I play with a lot of heart, and I love the game of basketball," Withers said. "I'm somebody who wants to give their all on the court, and give a little highlight here and there, too. Plus I'm a comical guy, with a silly sense of humor.
"I try to give the fans something all-around to enjoy."
The Wizards went into the night looking to get a lot bigger, but watched several centers they were eyeing get plucked early. Garret Siler went fifth to the Utah Flash, and Alade Aminu was taken 10th by Fort Wayne.
Still, White was happy with the players he added to the returning core of Renaldo Major, Maurice Baker, Romel Beck and David Bell.
"I'm happy with it," White said. "It's just quite a few of the picks that I was looking forward to picking got taken. But I have to look in the mirror and say I did a great job, because all the board is erased. Everybody else did their homework, too."
Withers, 25, averaged 15.0 points per game in college. He is one of only three players in school history to top the 1,000 mark in career rebounds.
"He's a strong power forward that can play with his back to the bucket," White said.
Withers has spent the last three seasons playing overseas, in Israel last season.
"The international market is broad," Withers said. "You can just as easily be lost as well as found. ... I'm 25 years old. Before I become an old man, I want to say I gave it my best shot."
In the second round the Wizards grabbed Doug Thomas, a 6-9, 240-pounder from Iowa. The Wizards will likely use Thomas, who averaged 10.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for the Iowa Energy in 2007-08, at center.
"He's going to be more a shot-blocker," White said. "He runs the floor, he rebounds, and he brings a lot of energy to the table."
In the third round the Wizards took forward Marcus Dove. The 6-9, 225-pounder played at Oklahoma State. Dove averaged 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game as a senior. He played in Belgium last season.
"He's going to be a multi-position player," White said. "He's a good defender. He can play 3-4. He's going to be like a Kevin Rice-type player, good energy, and will lock up people."
Dakota got a true center in the fourth round, drafting 6-10, 257-pound rookie D'Lancy Carter. Carter averaged 3.8 and 3.5 points per game as a senior at St. Bonaventure last season.
"I think he's going to have a really good upside," White said. "He's a big guy, but I think he moves his feet really well. He's going to have to do some work on his low-post game, but his energy running the floor and on defense, he's going to be able to help us."
The Wizards picked up a point guard in the fifth, drafting Jason Straight. The 6-2, 190-pounder averaging 18.0 points as a senior at Wyoming in 2004-05. Since then he has played internationally.
In the sixth round the Wizards opted for Darren Cooper, a shooting guard with D-League experience. Cooper played parts of the last two seasons with the Los Angeles D-Fenders, contributing 7.3 points per game last season.
The Wizards took small forward Rashaad Powell, a 6-6, 210-pounder who played collegiately at Idaho in the seventh round. He averaged 7.3 points per game as a senior in 2003-04, when he was named Big West defensive player of the year.
With their final pick, the Wizards selected Jimmy Binnie, a 6-7 forward from Dayton. He played in Denmark last year.
The Wizards begin camp on Nov. 15, and their season opener is Nov. 28.
"We'll have these guys get in camp and battle, and we'll see how they stack up against each other," White Said
NOTES: Carlos Powell, who was a third-team all-league selection for Dakota in 2007-08, went to Albuquerque with the No. 1 overall pick.
Powell averaged 22.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists in his season with the Wizards.
Former Wizards Perrin Johnson and Quemont Greer were both picked in the sixth round, Johnson going to Springfield with the 83rd pick, Greer to Austin with the 91st.
