Grant County and New Salem will meet tonight for the Mandan Holiday Tournament championship, and both teams needed overtime Friday night to get there.

Grant County outlasted Bottineau 49-45, and New Salem held off Shiloh Christian 58-56 at the Mandan High School gym to improve to 4-2 and 4-1, respectively.

The championship game is scheduled to begin at 7:45 p.m.

Grant County seven-footer Ben Kirsch had a 10-inch height advantage Friday night.

And he used it to his advantage.

The senior came up big for the second day in a row, scoring 25 points and blocking six shots in Grant County's win over Bottineau. Kirsch had 17 points and 13 blocks in a 66-45 opening-round win over Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock on Thursday.

"Ben's having a great tournament. … He's playing like he should," Grant County coach Ray Jones said. "We had a huge height advantage with him. We were able to get the ball in his hands, and he made his shots."

Kirsch's point total was a personal high.

"I've worked hard on my post moves and my shooting, and it's paying off," Kirsch said. "I hit some shots early tonight, and that got me going."

Kirsch's two-handed dunk with 1:25 left in regulation evened the score at 42. Bottineau then held the ball for the next 1:18 before a traveling violation turned it over to Grant County. A 3-point shot by the Coyotes' Weston Wells in the closing seconds missed the mark, sending the game into overtime.

Bottineau's Ben Diepolder scored 33 seconds into the extra session to put the Braves on top 44-42, but Kirsch answered 1:03 later to make it 44-44. After a Bottineau turnover, Joe Hillius scored with 1:57 left to give the Coyotes their first lead since the opening minute of the contest.

A Sean Rinkenberger free throw with 47 seconds left cut the Grant County lead in half, but a pair of Kollyn Miller charity tosses 14 ticks later made it 48-45 Coyotes.

Kirsch was later fouled with 18.2 seconds left after collecting a rebound. He went on to sink one of two free throws to make it a four-point game.

The Braves led through most of the game after jumping out to a 10-2 advantage. They later led 40-33 early in the fourth quarter before the Coyotes tied it at 40 with a 7-0 run.

"We hung in there. … Then we made a move," Jones said. "I thought our defense played well throughout. Good team defense was the difference."

Diepolder led the Braves with 13 points.

New Salem 58,

Shiloh 56, OT

New Salem held what appeared to be a safe 47-40 lead with under two minutes to play in regulation. However, the Skyhawks rallied to tie the score with a 7-0 run that spanned 1:03. Tommy Dwyer finished off the spurt with a 3-pointer with 47 seconds left.

Neither team scored the rest of regulation, but the Holsteins opened the overtime with six straight free throws, and held a 53-47 lead with 3:16 left. After Shiloh's R.J. Miller and Brady Bohl scored to make it 53-51, New Salem went ahead 56-51 after going 3-for-4 from the stripe. Ty Kruger made a pair of free throws with 1:51 to play, just two seconds after rebounding Jarad Wolf's miss of a second free-throw attempt.

Later, Jared Kautzman netted two charity tosses with 47.7 seconds left to make it 58-53.

The Holsteins made 11 of their first 12 free throws in overtime, after going 5-for-15 in regulation.

"That was frustrating. … We're usually a good free-throw shooting team," said Kautzman, who finished with 18 points. "But we made them when we had to. We just had to relax and shoot with some confidence."

Shiloh was hampered by foul trouble. Starters Trevor Singer and Brady Bohl sat out the last nine-plus minutes of the first half with three fouls apiece. Another starter, Jared Miller, picked up his third foul with 1:14 left in the half. All three eventually fouled out.

"We were very undisciplined in the first half," Shiloh coach Mike Dwyer said. "We picked up so many fouls with unnecessary reaches, trying to block shots rather than contest them, and just by being out of position. We had to keep juggling our lineup because of it. It's hard to get into a rhythm when that happens."

The Holsteins led 27-19 at halftime despite missing nine of 13 free throws. They stayed on top until a Bohl 3-pointer with 1:14 left in the third quarter gave the Skyhawks a 36-34 lead. Later, New Salem put together an 8-2 run that made it 47-40 Holsteins with 3:53 left. Shiloh started its rally two minutes later.

"We were in control out there most of the way, but you always have to beware of Shiloh," New Salem coach Rick Sturn said. "The kids worked hard and came through in the end. This is a big win for our program because Shiloh's always up there in our district."

Kruger also netted 18 points for the Holsteins. Reserve Austin Friesen led the Skyhawks with 11.
