10 years ago (1999): The Bismarck American Legion baseball team took care of Mandan 12-9.
John Stewart was the winner for the Governors, while Ron Bethke took the loss for the Chiefs. Scott McDonald also pitched for Bismarck, while Tyler Johnson was also on the hill for Mandan.
"Too many walks," Mandan coach Randy Will said.
For the Governors at the plate, Nathan Mickelson hit a home run and knocked in four runs, whiel Mike Gossett drew four walks. Joel Stugelmeyer went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.
For the Chiefs at the plate, Josh Mosser hit a home run and Tracy Geffre went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, while Joe Schneider finished 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Nate Lighthizer added two hits.
"No lead is safe here," Bismarck coach Gene Severson said. "That Mandan bunch has some big-time hitters."
Home plate umpire Jim Vossler more than earned his money in the game. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, a pitch from McDonald one-hopped off Vossler's left arm. Despite preliminary indications that the arm was broken, Vossler finished the game.
20 years ago (1989): BEULAH - Faint memories came back distinctly as alumni from Beulah High School played one another in a basketball game, complete with alumni cheerleaders.
More than 60 graduates participated as part of the all-school reunion for Beulah's 75th Jamboree.
Margie Emig, class of 1938, found it hard to sit still.
"I'd love to touch that basketball again," Emig said.
The game was a family affair, with some father-and-son combinations. Gary Murray and four of his five sons are former players.
Coach Paul Swanson, who led the Miners to three state tournaments in the 1950s, said it felt great to be coaching Beulah again.
"Some of these guys played for me before. They must be grandfathers by now," Swanson said.
50 years ago (1959): The Bismarck American Legion Junior baseball team, even without the services of vacationing Gordon Postovit, George Freeman and Bruce Howie, unlimbered some guns to swamp Jamestown 13-3.
