10 years ago (1999): The Mandan Chiefs scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning for a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Bismarck Governors in American Legion baseball.
Ron Bethke was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs batted in for Mandan, while Tracy Geffre hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Loren Novak added a sholo shot in the fourth inning, while Tyler Johnson picked up the win in relief of Andy Banning.
"Anytime you can come back and win a conference game, especially in Bismarck, it's a big win," Chiefs coach Randy Will said.
For Bismarck, Nathan Mickelson hit a three-run home run in the third inning, while A.J. Myer went 2-for-3. Scott McDonald threw a complete game, but was saddled with the loss.
"There was no question in my mind he was going to finish the game," Governors coach Gene Severson said of McDonald. "He's our ace … and he was still throwing strong."
20 years ago (1989): The Bismarck Royals and Napoleon took two wins in the Bismarck Class B tournament at Municipal Ballpark.
Royals pitchers surrendered just five hits in two games as the club improved to 12-2.
Scott Weissman tossed a one-hitter that was marred by nine walks in a 10-1 victory over the Mandan A's and Jeff Kanwischer came up with a four-hitter in a 10-4 triumph over Wing-Tuttle-Robinson.
Jim Breuer drilled three hits in the two games for the Royals, including a two-run first-inning home run against Mandan.
Brian Sperle and Dean Hayes won games for Napoleon.
The A's finished 1-1 on the day as Randy Hohbein earned the win.
The Bismarck Scarlets also finished 1-1 with Josh Nordine picking up the win.
50 years ago (1959): Nicola's jumped to a one-game lead in the City Softball League by over-running KFYR 16-6. In the second game, Werner's took over third place by edging Capital Commercial College 17-15 in a slugfest.
Dave Hummel had two home runs and Bill Leifur a pare of doubles for Nicola's. Ken Anderson was the winner.
E.J. Anderson and John Clement homered for KFYR. Bill Hydeman was the loser.
Wally Van Sickle paced Werner's with three singles in four times up as Schulz picked up the win.
Ed Volk had three hits, including a triple and a home run, for the College. Clayton Gruebele was the loser.
