The last time Tim Pharr was in Mandan, the rodeo gods weren't kind to him.

Pharr competed in the Mandan Rodeo in 2004 in tie down roping and came away with a no time.

The cowboy from Resaca, Ga., had better luck on Friday night. He took control of the overall lead with a time of 8.5 seconds, knocking Tyler Fagerhaug of Wessington, S.D., off the top. Fagerhaug led with a time of 8.8 after Thursday's action.

The rodeo wraps up tonight.

"I had trouble up here last time," said Pharr, a 30-year-old. "Ihad a lot better calf last time I came."

The purse at the Mandan Rodeo enticed Pharr to make another showing at the event. Pharr did some research on the calf he drew, and he said he felt confident in his ability to climb up the leader board.

"I felt confident with the calf I had," Pharr said. "I knew she didn't run hard, she was good on the ground and she tied good. I took a fairly aggressive start. I knew if I got the start right, everything else would fall into place."

Pharr said he had been in a slump the last couple weeks. Taking over the lead in Mandan has helped him break out of his dry spell.

"Before this, I didn't think I could catch a cold in sub-zero weather,"Pharr said. "This helps a ton. One calf can turn it all around. Rodeo is feast or famine. Right now it's feast. It's been famine."

Pharr plans to take two days off before competing in rodeos in Casper, Wyo., Sheridan, Wyo., and Colorado Springs, Colo.
